Chickens, Squirrels & Seed

This is a scene that plays every morning at our house :)

Web

We recently had a near catastrophe . We neglected to close the coop in the evening and the results were almost disastrous. I was working on my computer when I heard a ruckus from the vicinity of the coop. I raced outback to see my brother in a violent struggle with a couple opossums. In the melee Itty Bitty just had one of her eyes badly damaged and we were not sure if she would make it. Now a month later she is back to her old self with the only evidence of her ordeal being the loss of vision in the injured eye. It was a real emotional rollercoaster:)

The Thank You Chicken

One of happy families who visited the chickens made this great cotton ball chicken as a thank you. It is spectacular in all it’s detail!

Lake City Poultry Show

This Saturday January 10th 2009 I plan on making the three hour drive to the Columbia County Fair Grounds in Lake City Florida to witness the spectacle that is the 2009 ABA National Meet. This will be the second show I have attended and I am excited. See the first show I attended here.

As near as I can tell this is where it will be held

Crate Full of Chicken

potpie-harriet

Pot pie has to squeeze in next to Harriet to lay her daily egg because little prissy Harriet is all broody and insists on staying in Pot Pie's favorite spot. Harriet has not even laid any of her own eggs in the last two weeks so as soon as Pot Pie lays one and leaves Harriet plops down on it and commences to defend it by screaming and pecking if you try to take it.

Most days

Most days when I go out to the chicken coop I find three eggs small medium and large for each chicken in our back yard.

A couple of days ago when it rained I stepped out back to find wet hens.

Pot Pie was a little impatient seeing as it was getting way past her time to roost.

She is a patient bird but when push comes to shove she is feisty.
