On the way home form a photo shoot I spied a little hydroponic farm and market. Located on linebaugh avenue the Urban Oasis peaked my interest. Here is how they describe themselves.
Urban Oasis Hydroponic Farm is proud to offer locally grown, farm fresh vegetables. Our produce is grown using organic growing methods with no chemical pesticides. We believe this process results in higher quality, better tasting vegetables that are high in nutrition and value.
If it has been a while since you have tasted fresh produce do yourself a favor and stop by for some. I have been growing a few vegetables these last few years and the taste is considerably different than the blander commercially grown versions found in most grocery chains. I have not issue with my convenient well stocked local grocery store but when I can I go for the flavor of a more home grown product.
Dave and Cathy Hume were both at the front and graciously chatted with me about their little farm. I asked them a few questions about growing produce and told them about my home garden. Just looking around their place made it evident they knew what they were talking about and for any gardening novice a chat with them would be valuable. Proven ways and practical experience are the best sources for future success.
If every neighborhood had a an urban oasis or the like there would be plenty of produce to go around not to mention a more vital local economy. There is no substitute for self sufficiency in times of great need.
It does not take much area to produce food for a great number of people if you are willing to put your back into it!
Enjoyed the visit Dave and Cathy. Much future success!
