Mourning Dove Chick

This morning I was in front of the church preschool building when I spied Ida with child walking toward me on the side walk. They stopped and glanced at a small grey lump on the sidewalk. Ida then said,"did you see this". To which I replied,"no" and began moving in their direction. This is what my eyes did see when I first reached their location on the side walk.

Oh what a pitiful site is a baby bird on the ground it was a Mourning Dove chick. Let us never forget that one never falls without our Fathers knowledge.

28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the
soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not
fall on the ground without your Father.
30 But the very hairs of your
head are all numbered.
31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value
than many sparrows.
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before
men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven
Matthew
10:28-32

There was a small trial of ants beginning to from around the little bird so I started looking for the nest.

I picked the little feather ball up.

Now a chick never falls far from the nest so it took mere seconds to locate the rather cramped excuse for an abode. There is was just above the place where the pitiful creature landed and there was momma dove sitting motionless so as not to be seen.

I secured a ladder and climbed to the top. Momma bird took flight and I put the chick back in the nest. I used a few fronds to weave fence of sorts around the low side of the nest and presto everything was back as it should be. After the Bible study concluded I went back by and there was momma right back on the nest!

  1. I found a baby dove about the same age. But, it was cold when I found it. I warmed it up and sadly there was a broken dove nest by it. So I called the DNR and said if you put it back out side alone and if the mother doesn't return, you can take care of it. The first night was rough but he or she is doing great! I named it Cameron.
