1 Kings 19
1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.
2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.
3 And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.
4 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.
5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.
6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
7 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.
8 And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
15 And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:
16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.
17 And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.
18 Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
19 So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.
20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?
21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

Hmm...interesting. I thought the Lord was in ALL things. How did you interperet that?
ReplyDeleteI try not to do alot of interpretation. The Bible is so explicit interpretation is not necessary. Now if it was written in Hebrew that would be a different story.
ReplyDeleteInteresting...I guess I should as, then, do you think that these hurricanes are God's doing?
ReplyDeleteThis chapter is very comforting to me. When I think of the omnipotence of God I am reminded that He is the creator of everything. In this chapter when the Lord passes His presence cannot be ignored. He is the God of the universe and He has the power to cause the earth to crumble and disappear.
ReplyDeleteElijah is told my God to go to a mountain and stand before the Lord. With the Lords arrival every natural process man has feared from the time we first brought the curse of death to creation with sin is manifested. This chapter is such a comfort because the Lord was not about the turmoil He was in the still small voice, the peace in the middle of the circumstances.
Everyone will have their personal end time whether it be under catastrophic circumstances or a simple ceasing of the heart on a bed surrounded by loved one. For centuries believers have seen natural disasters as a sign of Christ return. I know as a disciple of Jesus that my challenge is to live as thought I will be face to face with Him in the next moment. These various natural events may very well be the circumstances the Bible speaks of that mean the end of the kingdom of earth and the beginning of God’s Kingdom in heaven. I do not know and the Bible says that no one else does either, but I will live as though they are.
If this generation has the privilege we may be taken from the earth without having to cease living in the biological sense. Just like that all those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that He died for you and me to free us from the penalty of sin will be in His presence. In a blink in the twinkling of an eye we will be gone for the face of the earth. This event will be followed by the great tribulation and earth without the presence of God people and the restrain of God Holy Spirit.
Too often we allow our life to be paralyzed by what we see with our moist round eye balls when we should view the scene with our spiritual eyes. There have been more than a few times when the still small voice of Jesus has guided me when I needed it most and when I respond I soar to new heights of peace, gratitude, and Love.
The world is lost, confused, and dark. Just take one look at what passes for entertainment and it cannot be denied. We spend hours watch aliens, detailed crime scene investigation, sensational sex scandals of every kind, and beautiful people living shattered lives.
Jesus is and always has been the answer and I praise God I have been given the eyes to see His love for me.
THat was beautiful, Billy. Seriously. SO insightful. And you're right, no one does know when the end of the earth is....and no one should. I read this right before work the other day and it made me truly stop thinking about all the devastation in the world:
ReplyDeleteSo when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"
He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy spirit comes on you..." Acts 1:6-8 NIV
Thanks HG! God is good and in this age of grace he has given no one any special "annonting" to be closer to Him or understand Him in better way than other. The scripture is for eveyone and we do not have to take anyone's word about what is truth.
ReplyDeleteThank you for including the reference! Here is an interesting one that may or may not have much to do with the topic. Nobody has to take my word for it thye can prayerfully search the scriptures themselves. YEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAW!
Mark 13
4 Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?
5 And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you:
6 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
7 And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet.
8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.
9 But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.
10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations.
11 But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.
12 Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.
13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:
15 And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house:
16 And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.
17 But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter.
19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.
20 And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
21 And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:
22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
23 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.
24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,
25 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.
26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
27 And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.
28 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:
29 So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.
30 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
33 Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
34 For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
