When I was a little boy I recall standing on the bank of the Saint Johns River with my father and hearing him tell me the story of the Ivory Billed Wood Pecker. I believe it was the first time I understood that creatures could disappear never to return. I remember thinking how wonderful it would be to discover one of these now legendary birds deep in some untouched tract of forest. Today I was amazed to read that the Ivory Billed Wood Pecker has been rediscovered!
