Hawk
There are an ever increasing number of raptors in the general area these last few years. The Tampa area is developing so quickly with such poor planning for quality of life issues that these birds of prey have taken to the streets of neighborhood everywhere. I am happy at the sight of them.
This morning I knew one was on the wing. You rarely see them for they are very stealthy. They normally fly very low and weave through the canopy of trees to remain concealed. You can however always be sure one is in the area when the local birds are in an uproar. The Blue Jays are especially vigilant and capable of making a terrible racket.
This is what I heard at 9:30 this morning. I went outside and look to see at least five Blue Jays in the oak tree across the street. I could see feathers drifting from a low branch and knew that a hawk was plunking a bird. I ran back in to get my camera.
As I approached I was able to keep the trunk of the tree between me and the hawk which allowed me to get closer than I normally am able. The hawk saw me as soon as I peeked around the trunk but lingered long enough for me to get a shot. Hawks are devourers. They eat like wolves and you would think they are in a constant state of starvation judging from the way they rip up their prey. They are fierce and terrifying. The only consolation is the swift end that the small creatures met when captured by these hunters.

Lucky for us out here in Lutz, there is still undeveloped property. We have a conservation area behind the house and we frequently spot these sneeky birds sitting in the tops of the trees. They are beautiful.
ReplyDeletecatching up on posts...you have so many frogs there. it's weird- we only have one kind- th eplain ugly kind and they give me the creeps. they get smushed alot on the road here in the summer.
