The Big Twist with Lots of Spin
From the forecast of a direct hit to a complete miss. We were spared the destruction that comes with the big twist. As I sit and reflect several hours after the passage of the Hurricane and rational thought processes begin once again to guide my thinking I am thankful we are alive uninjured and living in a community which can continue to go about our daily lives with virtually no interruption. Our neighbors south and east are in a bad way and will be cleaning up for weeks.
As the hurricane approached we watch the news media consistently report the hurricane’s path as a bee line for the mouth of Tampa Bay. All the residence in low lying areas A,B,C were ordered to head to the east which is farther inland. Many did so and ironically moved right in to the path of the hurricane. All the communities south of Sarasota were surprised to find that upon hitting the Gulf Stream Charley preceded to spin right toward them eventually troubling them greatly.
You cannot predict the path of a
hurricane! Intellectually
we all know this but we so want to believe that
technology has the answers to
all the riddles. The more advanced the
technology the more we simply stand in
awe of the unpredictability of the
natural world.
The media, with it’s “You can’t survive without us” fervency, iterrupted only by the usual car, trial lawyer, and feminine hygiene product advertisement, strikes out again. What we need to see is a channel with an uninterrupted feed of the satellite loop. We can draw our own conclusions. The fact is, if a hurricane is coming everyone needs to find a sturdy structure on sufficiently high ground…… nough said. I appreciate the effort that the media made to inform and instruct but their conviction that they knew so precisely where the hurricane was headed was a bit ambitious.
