This image of a Green June Beetle was snapped in the back yard. I observed more than a few buzzing about our Avocado tree. This was highly unusual in my experience. I am used to seeing one or two at night under the porch light but they were all over the back yard. I also observed them crawling on the grass and later found that they were laying eggs in the soil. There were a number of wasps hovering over the grass in the same area and I discovered that they were on the scene to lay their eggs as well. The lava of the wasps are parasites that feed on the beetle larva.
I think the metal appearance of these Scarab Beetles is amazing. They appear to be made of chrome painted with green lacquer. They look more mechanical than biological! They make a loud buzzing in flight. If we were the size of an ant I am quite sure that this buzzing would be deafening if they flew near.
